A science lab is a place that opens up a world of seemingly endless possibilities. It’s full of interesting lessons and exciting experiments. It doesn’t matter if you’re a lab manager, a science teacher, or a lab technician, making sure the science laboratory is safe should be your top priority. You might also have a science lab in your house. Whichever the case is, you should be actively looking for ways to promote safety in the science lab all the time. If you need some ideas or tips, we have a number of helpful tips on making a science lab safe for everyone.

Put a number of rules in place: There should be laws governing acceptable and unacceptable behavior in the science lab, acceptable dress codes, do’s and don’ts. Everyone coming into the science lab should be aware of these rules and should also be able to abide by them, to promote and foster a safer lab. Some examples of these rules are no pushing, no running around, no loitering, and no disturbing.

Install a lot of safety equipments: Accidents are one hundred percent unwanted, but they still happen. You should endeavor to be proactive and not reactive. Fit your science lab with helpful safety equipments that may turn out to be live savers one day. Things like fire extinguishers, sand buckets, and eyewash stands are necessary for a safe science lab.

Label everything: The importance of this procedure should never be underestimated. Skipping this step is extremely dangerous. Everything in the science lab should be labeled, with instructions of use added where necessary. If you notice anything with a torn or damaged label, endeavor to replace the label to enhance and ensure safety. There should also be safety and danger warnings.

Safety gear is of utmost importance: Stock up the science lab with safety gear including but not limited to lab goggles, lab coats, lab aprons, and gloves. Merely stocking the lab with safety gear is not enough, you have to make sure that everyone who steps into the science lab has their protective gear on at all time.

Situate the lab in a well-lit and well-aired location: This is important, because it reduces the chances of fires starting as a result of extreme heat. When the science lab is also well-lit, people will be able to see and read instructions better and avoid mistakes.

There should always be a qualified adult in the room: Children should not be left alone in the science lab. It’s no secret that they are inquisitive and curious, and most times they’re always tinkering with stuff. When left alone in the lab, they can play with dangerous and harmful chemicals or equipments, leading to an accident or damage in the lab. This can be easily avoided if an adult is always present with them in the lab. Also, if any experiment is to be carried out, a qualified adult such as the lab technician or the science teacher should be there to guide them.

There should also be no food or drink in the lab at any time, as this may lead to the ingestion of harmful materials. If you follow and implement these tips, your science lab will be a safe haven.
